MONO CABIN
Project
Details
Location
Mono Mills, Ontario
Vision
This beautiful residential green roof is one of the most densely biodiverse in the ZinCo portfolio. Given that the owner of the property is well-known Canadian botanist, Tony Spencer, this green roof took inspiration from his award winning gardens on the ground, to create a wild yet manicured roofscape above on the main house.
Design
The design intent for this green roof was inspired by an alvar ecosystem. Boasting a mix of native perennials and grasses punctuated by introduced nursery species, this roof garden is a mingling mosaic of diversity. Not evident in the images is the gradual mounding of the growing medium from 100mm (4”) to 150mm (6”) in several areas throughout the roofscape. This allowed for the introduction of larger vegetation to be planted creating a more texturized green roof right from the initial planting.
Green Roof Assembly
This low sloping roof with a medium structural capacity meant that ZinCo Intensive Roof Garden build-up with Floradrain® FD 40-E was the optimal assembly. The additional water storage capacity of the drainage board and Intensive Growing Medium allows for plant diversity to thrive even without permanent irrigation.
